Job description
Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money.
Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.
Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.
As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.
For everyone, everywhere.
More about our mission and what we offer.
We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Rules Platform team (Risk & Control Tooling) in Tallinn.
The team builds and maintains the shared infrastructure that enables teams across Wise — including Fraud, AML and KYC— to create, execute and manage risk assessments and controls.
Our goal is to make risk assessments fast, reliable, scalable and easy to integrate, while ensuring that the systems protecting our customers remain consistent and maintainable as Wise grows.
You'll work on complex backend challenges involving distributed systems, shared Engineering components (internal libraries), data consistency and platform reliability, with the opportunity to influence technical decisions and help shape the future of the platform.
What you'll be working on
- Building and evolving our Rules Platform, developing reliable, scalable backend services and reusable internal libraries used by multiple Engineering teams.
- Driving technical design and architecture decisions for complex distributed systems where performance, reliability and data consistency are critical.
- Improving platform performance and reliability, monitoring service-level objectives (SLOs), identifying bottlenecks and driving improvements.
- Collaborating across teams, working closely with Product Managers and Engineers to understand their needs, prioritise improvements and make the platform easier to use and extend.
- Taking ownership of meaningful Engineering initiatives, from identifying problems and evaluating trade-offs through to implementation and delivery.
- Supporting Engineering excellence, contributing to technical discussions, code reviews and mentoring other engineers.
What you'll bring
- Strong hands-on experience with JVM-based languages, such as Java or Kotlin, and building complex backend systems.
- Experience with Kafka, SQL databases and distributed systems, particularly where reliability and data consistency matter.
- Experience building or maintaining internal libraries, shared components or reusable Engineering solutions consumed by multiple teams.
- Confidence in system design and technical decision-making, including evaluating trade-offs and proposing architectural improvements.
- A strong product mindset, with the ability to understand the needs of internal users and work closely with Product Managers.
- Experience mentoring other Engineers and contributing to Engineering best practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams and explain technical decisions clearly.
Nice to have
- Experience with Spring / Spring Boot and build tooling.
- Experience in FinTech, FinCrime or risk-related systems.
- Familiarity with regulated environments where auditability, traceability and governance are important.
You don't need to tick every box. We're interested in Engineers who enjoy solving complex problems, take ownership of their work and are motivated to learn and grow.
What we offer you
- 💶Salary range: 5750 - 7083.33 EUR gross/monthly
- 🚀 RSUs in a growing company
- Hybrid working in Tallinn, Estonia (with relocation and visa sponsorship support, if needed)
- 💪 A robust annual self-development budget for your professional growth
- 🌿 3 fully paid ‘me days’ per year to help you manage life
- 📈Opportunities to grow your technical expertise, mentor others and progress along our Engineering Career Map.
