Job description

Klarna, briefly
At Klarna, we’re building an everyday finance network, helping over 120 million consumers across 26 countries save time and money, and worry less about their finances. Working here means taking on problems most companies never get to solve, and being hands-on enough that the interesting part of the work lands with you, not someone else — you’ll build with AI, not watch it happen.

This is the stretch zone. Come find out what you’re capable of.

About The Role
Every payment a consumer makes through Klarna passes through backend services that have to respond in real time and keep responding when parts of the system fail. This position sits on the team that builds and runs those services in Erlang, primarily Kred and the Card payment gateway.

You’ll work in a cross-functional team on distributed systems problems where availability, fault tolerance, and performance decide whether a payment goes through. You’ll own services from design to production, and you’ll have a say in the architecture decisions that shape them.

What You’ll Do

  • You’ll design, build, and maintain the backend systems behind those payment services.
  • You’ll work with cross-functional teams to solve distributed systems problems and contribute to architecture decisions and implementation.
  • You’ll own your services end to end, and keep them available, fault tolerant, and fast in a real-time environment.
  • You’ll improve how engineers across the organization build and operate services, and share what you learn with them.

Who You Are

  • You’re a software engineer who has written production code in Erlang, or you’ve worked in Elixir and can move to Erlang.
  • You understand distributed systems, concurrency, and fault-tolerant design, and you’ve applied them in production.
  • You’ve built and maintained scalable, high-availability systems in production, including on AWS.
  • You’ve worked with APIs, messaging systems, and microservices architectures.
  • You write clean, testable, maintainable code.
  • You’ve worked in agile teams alongside cross-functional colleagues, and you diagnose problems in complex systems.
  • You communicate in English at a working level, verbally and in writing.

Bonus points for

  • You’ve worked with OTP principles and the wider Erlang ecosystem.
  • You’ve used containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • You’ve done monitoring, observability, or performance tuning in distributed systems.
  • You’ve worked in fintech, payments, or another high-availability environment.
  • You’ve worked with card payment APIs.

Things you should know before applying

  • Working together: we value co-located teams; most teams currently meet in the office 2–3 days per week, and this varies by team and can change over time.
  • Non-obvious backgrounds are welcome. Diversity of skills, perspectives and backgrounds is how we create, innovate, and disrupt like no other.
  • Final compensation will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experience.

Please include a CV in English. Concrete beats comprehensive — what you built, what it did, what it cost. Curious to learn more about Klarna and what it’s like to work here? Explore our career site!
