Staff Software Engineer, Home and Health Infrastructure

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience with software development in C++.
• 5 years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale ML infrastructure and distributed systems.
• 3 years of experience with software design and architecture and technical leadership.

Preferred qualifications:

• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
• Experience in one or more of the following: Java, Go, Python, Kotlin.
• Experience in performing in-depth "forensics" on distributed systems to root-cause complex failures across multiple languages and frameworks.
• Ability to drive product evolution through A/B testing and metric analysis.

The Health mission is to empower people to live longer and healthier lives. As a software engineer on the Health and Home Infrastructure team in Zurich, you will build and maintain the software infrastructure that powers products relied on by millions of people in their daily lives.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain high-performance, low-latency platform services in C++ and Java that reliably serve millions of users.
• Develop robust distributed microservices and RPC-based architectures, specializing in real-time voice/audio processing and streaming protocols.
• Create and optimize ML pipelines, overseeing dataset management, data processing, and frameworks for model training, evaluation, and deployment.
• Perform root-cause complex failures across multi-service environments, establish robust architectural guardrails, and lead data-driven change management using A/B testing, log analysis, and metrics.
• Collaborate directly with internal developers and end-users to identify friction points, author clear technical design documents, and foster high-alignment engineering discussions.
