Job Description
About Bolt Bolt is shaping a future where cities are built for people, not cars. What started as an ambitious project of a 19-year-old in 2013 has grown into a global mobility platform used by more than 200 million customers and 4.5 million driver and courier partners across 50 countries.
From ride-hailing and food delivery to scooters, e-bikes, and car-sharing, Bolt helps people move through cities every day. Small, autonomous teams drive this work, combining the speed and ownership of a startup with the scale of a global technology company backed by more than €1bn in funding.
And we're just getting started.
Why join Bolt?
- Build the future of mobility and help transform how people live and move in cities.
- Tackle challenges at scale that span technology, operations, regulation, and growth.
- Take real ownership early. Small, lean teams mean your decisions matter from day one, and you'll learn fast alongside some of the best people in the industry.
- Join one of Europe's leading technology companies, backed by world-class investors including Sequoia.
About The Role The Internal Products and Processes team designs and builds internal software products for Bolt from scratch. Our portfolio spans people and organisational products, platform automation, and the AI tooling that lets any team at Bolt automate cross-system work and build with AI safely. Most of what we build is developed in-house because off-the-shelf tools do not fit Bolt's scale, internal systems, or way of working. That means real research and development: integrating with internal data platforms, designing access-control models, and building capabilities that do not exist in the tools we use today.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting, designing, developing, and deploying our backend systems. That will mostly happen via coding in Node.js and TypeScript (PS: no previous experience with Node.js is needed). You will also work on our AI products, where the consumers of your work are as often agents as they are people.
You will collaborate closely with key internal stakeholders across Bolt (People, Legal, Finance, Engineering, and others) to determine how to design backend systems and APIs at scale to meet their needs.
Main Tasks And Responsibilities
- Architecting, designing, developing, and deploying our internal backend systems, including the AI tooling and agent-facing integrations behind them (coding mostly in Node.js and TypeScript).
- Building products used across the whole company, with direct and measurable impact on how thousands of Bolters work every day.
- Taking ownership of technical direction and architecture for the systems you build.
- Collaborating with key internal stakeholders to determine how to scalably design backend systems and APIs to meet their needs.
- Leading features and initiatives from idea to execution, working closely with Product to slice the scope and deliver piece by piece.
- Sharing your knowledge by giving tech talks and promoting appropriate tech and engineering best practices in and outside of the team.
About You
- You feel at home with microservice architecture, you are experienced in API design, and you have a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures. Experience with React is a plus, as our products have a user-facing side.
- You have strong principles towards writing clean, simple, secure, and maintainable code.
- You thrive in an environment with a fast customer-feedback cycle and have empathy for the end-user, in our case, your colleagues at Bolt.
- You enjoy working directly with non-engineering stakeholders, turning a manual process into a product, and you are comfortable switching context between different products and problem domains, as well as working in a space where the AI tooling changes every few months.
- You have a drive to lead initiatives to the end, even when the last mile is the hardest, and you make data-driven decisions along the way.
Why you’ll love it here
- Accelerate your professional growth with unique career opportunities.
- Enjoy a rewarding salary and stock options, knowing that as Bolt succeeds, so do you.
- Take care of your physical and mental health with our wellness perks.
- Celebrate 5 years at Bolt with a 1-month paid sabbatical to recharge.
- Connect with colleagues at annual company events and smaller team gatherings.
- Balance flexibility and in-person collaboration with our hybrid model, including at least 12 monthly in-office days.
Some perks may differ depending on your location and role. At Bolt, using AI daily is a baseline expectation for everyone. If there’s a faster, smarter way to do your work, we expect you to find it. You’re still responsible for the output, so the standard stays high when using AI tools.
Experience is great, but what we really look for is drive, intelligence, and integrity. So even if you don’t tick every box, please consider applying!
Everyone is welcome Bolt is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where all qualified applicants are considered for employment without regard to race, colour, nationality, religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or disability.
We welcome applications from all backgrounds and are happy to make reasonable accommodations throughout our hiring process. If you require any adjustments, please let us know.
