Senior Software Development Engineer, Transactional Data Storage

Description Do you want to work deep inside a database that processes billions of transactions every day across Amazon's consumer and digital businesses? Our team builds the data platforms at the core of Amazon, storing customer orders, catalog and product information, shopping carts, device data, and hundreds of other business-critical datasets. We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer who understands distributed systems at scale and wants to shape the shared storage layer of our next-generation online transaction processing (OLTP) database. You will design how committed transactions are materialized to cloud object storage, how space is reclaimed as data is superseded, and how data nodes read back through a storage-format-agnostic contract. You will partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to leverage cloud-native technologies and contribute innovations back to the broader market. Key job responsibilities

• Design, develop, and operate the distributed shared storage layer that holds the durable copy of every committed write for Amazon's mission-critical OLTP database platform.
• Collaborate with Principal Engineers and peers to define technical solutions for complex problems such as storage engine design, durability and consistency protocols, read-path caching, and backpressure under load.
• Own end-to-end delivery of features, from writing design documents and implementing production-quality code to driving operational readiness and deployment.
• Mentor engineers through design and code reviews, pairing on hard problems, and helping them take on larger pieces of the system while raising the team's quality bar.
• Build monitoring, alarming, and automation that keep our high-throughput services reliable, and participate in on-call rotations to troubleshoot issues and drive root-cause resolution.

A day in the life

You will split your time between deep individual work like writing code, reviewing designs, and prototyping storage-layer changes, and collaborative sessions with your team and partner teams. Expect regular design reviews where you debate trade-offs around durability, latency, and cost, along with weekly operational reviews that keep the platform healthy. Some weeks you will be heads-down implementing a new compaction strategy; other weeks you will pair with a teammate to debug a subtle consistency issue in production.

About The Team Our team sits within the Transact organization and is responsible for the storage engine layer that underpins Amazon's OLTP platform that powers all Amazon Stores. We are a group of engineers who care deeply about correctness, performance, and operational rigor. We partner closely with AWS service teams, sharing innovations in both directions. Our focus over the coming years is scaling the next-generation storage layer to meet Amazon's growing transaction volume while improving efficiency and reducing costs, and we are looking for engineers who want to help shape that future.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Experience in professional, non-internship software development
• Experience in development in the last 3 years
• Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
• Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
• Experience in debugging, profiling, and implementing software engineering best practices in large-scale systems
• Knowledge of databases, storage and big data concepts
• Experience with performance and scalability testing
