Job description

What to Expect

Tesla Energy designs, commissions, and maintains Megapack sites around the world. Those sites run modern OT SCADA systems, often offline, with hundreds of devices, and sometimes thousands. Each device needs a management connection, and it also needs monitoring, logging, and authentication.

As SCADA Infrastructure Engineer, you will unify the platforms the team uses day to day and provide the infrastructure that lets HMI, PLC, networking, and electrical protection specialists do their work. You understand how a substation is put together and how it communicates, you are comfortable building and running infrastructure in constrained OT environments, and you work well with engineering and site teams.

What You'll Do

  • Own and unify the platforms used to design, commission, and maintain Tesla Megapack sites
  • Provide management connectivity, monitoring, logging, and authentication for large, often air-gapped OT SCADA environments
  • Give HMI, PLC, networking, and electrical protection specialists a reliable infrastructure to work on
  • Deploy and operate container and hypervisor platforms, including Docker, Kubernetes, and ESXi or equivalent
  • Automate infrastructure with tools such as Ansible
  • Work with substation and industrial protocols including IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE, Sampled Values), IEC 104, Modbus, and DNP3
  • Support secure remote and local access paths (RDP, HTTP(S), SSH, Telnet, FTP(S)) in OT environments
  • Apply OT cybersecurity principles to designs and day-to-day operations

What You'll Bring

  • Practical OT knowledge: how a substation works, how devices communicate, and the systems that tie it together
  • Working knowledge of IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE, Sampled Values), IEC 104, Modbus, and DNP3
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes; air-gapped or offline deployment is a plus
  • Experience with ESXi or other hypervisors
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Ansible
  • Solid grasp of cybersecurity fundamentals; knowledge of IEC 62351 and IEC 62443 is a plus
  • Rust or Go development experience is a plus
  • Degree in electrical engineering, computer science, automation, or a related field, or equivalent working experience
  • Clear communication skills, and comfort working with specialist engineering teams
  • Ability to work through complex, constrained OT environments with limited direction
